ELIGIBILITY

Please refer to the GHG Applicant Guide for further detail.

Education

To be eligible for the EP(GHG) or EPt(GHG) programs, you must have a 3-4 year bachelor level university degree in a relevant field, or equivalent.

Relevant fields of education would include:

  • Engineering
  • Natural Science
  • Environmental Science
  • Environmental Technology
  • Accounting

Equivalence will be assessed on a case-by-case basis for applicants that:

  • Have graduated from a non-relevant degree
  • Have graduated from a program below the 3-4 year bachelor degree level

Eligibility will be assessed using the World Guide to Higher Education that is published and maintained by UNESCO.

Work Experience
All applicants for the EP(GHG) designation must have a minimum of five years of relevant work experience.

Relevant employment information would include engineering, environmental auditing, accounting, emissions inventory, and climate change experience.

Internships are acceptable for use towards satisfying the work experience requirements as long as they are work placements that are independent of post-secondary studies. Any work completed as a requirement for graduation is not acceptable to use towards satisfying the work experience requirements.

Formal Training
Formal training is not required for EP(GHG) applicants, however, if you have taken acceptable training, you are entitled to use said training in lieu of two work logs.

Formal training is required for EPt(GHG) applicants. Acceptable training is defined as:

  • For Verifiers (EP(GHG) or EPt(GHG)) – Training focused on inventory or project verification standards, practices, or programs, consisting of 24 hours of formal, relevant course time.
  • For Quantifiers (EP(GHG)/EPt(GHG)) – Training focused on inventory or project quantification standards, or practices, consisting of 16 hours of formal, relevant course time.

Following is a list of some acceptable training providers (others may be acceptable as well, subject to Registrar Review):

Work Logs
EP(GHG) applicants must demonstrate professional practice via the submission of GHG work logs, in order to demonstrate that his/her quantification and/or verification experience was gained under the prescribed conditions and within the required time frame. EPt(GHG) applicants need not submit work logs, however if an EPt(GHG) applicant has work logs to submit, applicants are encouraged to do so.

Work Logs are defined as any GHG activity completed (in part) by the applicant, such as a GHG verification, GHG inventory quantification, GHG project quantification, GHG validation, or other similar activity acceptable to the Registrar.

EP(GHG) applicants are required to submit, at minimum, ten (10) GHG Work Logs. As stated above, if the applicant has taken appropriate training, eight (8) work logs will be accepted. Of these work logs, two must have been completed under ISO, or comparable (i.e. IPCC, CDM), standards. Applicants may meet the eligibility requirements with less than ten (10) GHG work logs if they document a total of 36 months of GHG activities, within the work logs they do submit.
